What is on-device AI?

Published 5 October 2026. General information for dog owners, not veterinary or behavioural advice.

When you say a smart speaker's wake word, it reacts before anything has been sent to the internet. A tiny AI model inside the speaker is listening for that one phrase. That is on-device AI, sometimes called edge AI, and it is quietly becoming normal.

Cloud AI and on-device AI

With cloud AI, a device records something, sends it to a data centre, waits for powerful computers to analyse it and receives an answer. With on-device AI, a small model stored on the device's own chip does the analysis, and nothing needs to leave.

Many products use both. A smart speaker spots its wake word locally, then sends only what follows to the cloud.

How small can a model be?

Smaller than you would think. Teaching materials for engineers show keyword-spotting models running on microcontrollers that cost a few pounds, using kilobytes of memory. These chips draw so little power that they can listen continuously.

The trade-off is scope. A small model does one narrow job, such as recognising a handful of sounds. It cannot hold a conversation.

Why build it this way

  • Speed. There is no round trip to a server, so the response is immediate.
  • Privacy. If audio is analysed on the device and then discarded, it never exists anywhere else.
  • Reliability. The device keeps working when the Wi-Fi drops.
  • Cost. No cloud processing means no running bill for every device sold, and no need for a subscription to cover it.

The limits

On-device models are harder to improve after a product ships, since an update has to reach every unit. They are constrained by cheap hardware. And "runs on the device" is a claim worth checking: some products process locally and still upload recordings for other reasons.

Why it suits products for the home

A device that listens in a bedroom or living room asks for a lot of trust. Doing the listening locally, keeping nothing, and working without an account or an internet connection is the most straightforward way to earn it.

What to look for

If a product says it uses on-device AI, ask whether it still works offline, whether any audio is stored or sent, and whether those answers are written down in its privacy policy.
